These 3 paintings are part of a series inspired by the archetypical figures found in “Les Illuminations”, song cycle for string orchestra and high voice, on poetry by Arthur Rimbaud and music by Benjamin Britten.

“Daughter of Air – Mother of Waters, Ilmatar – otherwise known as Luonnotar, this painting shows the goddess of the Finnish epic poem of Kalevala during the 700 years she is aimlessly drifting the open oceans, regretting to have left the heavens, pregnant by the sea but unable to give birth. This painting was inspired by the homonymous musical work composed by Jean Sibelius which is very dear to my heart.”.

“Ancestral medusas. Heartless, brainless, immortal. I was sad and needed a silent space. And as I beckoned they visited. These visitors, whether in a fluther or solitary, hang on the walls like ancient souls that float about the sea of my head.”
